Matt Furniss' wonderfully atmospheric music from Laser Squad on the Amiga. Part of my classic game video music playlist    • Classic video game music

Laser Squad is a turn-based combat game from genre pioneer and legend Julian Gollop. It was originally developed by Target Games for the ZX Spectrum in 1988 and then ported to several other platforms, including the Commodore 64 and Amiga.

Laser Squad expands on the concepts of Gollop's previous games, such as the Speccy classic Rebelstar (1984), which in turn take their inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons and other table-top strategy and RPGs of the era. The gameplay revolves around squad-level tactics, including choosing from different types of weapons and armour for your men, and completing specific objectives, such as rescues and assassination.

Laser Squad set the template for Gollop's seminal masterpiece UFO: Enemy Uknown (1994), which incorporates and expands upon many of its predecessor's concepts.

My main experience of Laser Squad is on the Speccy, but I love the music from the Amiga version and the way it gives the relatively static turn-based action a much more dynamic vibe.
