The 90s techno-stylings of the titles music from Walker on the Amiga. See more of my classic game video music playlist    • Classic video game music

Walker is a side-scrolling shooter developed by DMA Design (the studio behind Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto) and published by Psygnosis for the Amiga in 1993.

Starting in World War II, the game puts you in charge of a time-travelling bipedal mech (a Walker unit) that must fight its way through waves of infantry, armoured vehicles, and air units.

The mech is armed with dual machine guns that quickly overheat if you don't use them in short, controlled bursts. Happily, you can also just walk over the soldiers and squish their puny bodies with your massive metallic feet. You move the Walker with the keyboard and control the guns with the mouse.

The stages include Berlin 1944, Los Angeles 2019, modern-day Middle East (well, 1993!), and The Great War 2420. Remember when 2019 used to be the future?

I love Walker's titles sequence and Raymond Usher's OTT seven-minute sample-laden intro track but I have mixed feelings about the game.

It's certainly a cool concept. The sound design is brilliant and the Walker unit and its detailed animations still look great. However, the monochrome backdrops and crappy enemy sprites annoyed me back in the day and haven't dated well. I always felt that Walker would have benefited from an AGA version.

I also find the game far too hard. I only occasionally get past the second stage (Los Angles) and have never made it to The Great War without using a trainer.

I sourced the mod file from UnExoticA (www.exotica.org.uk).
