Funny Women: MAGDA SZUBANSKI Dave's Tributes
For me there is no-one funnier downunder than Magda Szubanski who burst onto the Australian comedy scene in the mid 80's and she has been a constant ever since. Commencing with 'The D-Generation', it was the sketch comedy show 'Fast Forward' that made Magda a household name and her array of hilarious characters allowed audiences to fall in love with her. Many national surveys over the years as to whom most Aussies trust, Magda is invariably at the top or near atop the list; such is the reverence with which she is held in this country.
'Chanielle', 'Pixie Ann Wheatley', 'Lynne Postlethwaite, 'Mary McGregor' and 'Cheryl Ugly' are random names but characters Magda brought to life during the series run, and of course 'Sharon' her 'Big Birls Blouse' persona which was spun into the legendary 'Kath & Kim' sitcom which kept the actor's profile high into the 00's. Magda has turned her hand to presenting, dramatic acting and light entertainment, but it is her willingness to really go for it in the sorts of over the top figures as the ones I have selected for this post, that best represent her talent and massively funny screen presence. The outtakes are just as, if not funnier than the segments themselves. I never tire of Magda's creations and they are in part the reason audiences adore her so - she is unafraid to be flawed, grotesque and just plain silly; but also sweet and sympathetic - such was the myriad of great characterizations she created.
There was no need for music here, just clips of Magda Szubanski being...well Magda Szubanski. I could have created segments for her co-stars Gina Riley, Marg Downey, and Jane Turner but for me it is Magda who wears the crown for the funniest woman in Australia. I am not alone with this sentiment.
