The Book Thief
Have you ever lost someone? Well our main character Liesel has lost a lot and she has to go to strangers in Nazi Germany to hope they accept her into her family as a thief and broken. She was filled with nightmares and sorrow until she became friends with her new father, Hans Hubermann, and her classmate Rudy Steiner. Liesel isn’t the only main character in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak there is Rudy her best friend and her father. In her time at the hubermanns, she learns to do chores every night and Hans goes down to the basement with her to help her nightmares of her brother dying and to help her learn to read. Liesel during the day goes to school as a Hitler Youth and she has to deal with students making fun of her since she can't read. Then after she like to play soccer with Rudy and the other kids or go steal books or food from the mayor's library. There are bonfires for the Hitler youth and some books were not burned in the fire and that furthered her title from Rudy as the book thief. Liesel made many other friends like Max who is a Jew and she must keep him secret from everyone else or her family and Max will be killed. She lives a peaceful life hiding Max until World War two where terror and air raids start. This was especially scary for Max because he can’t go to a shelter or he’ll be killed, but if he stays, he might die. During Liesel's life on Himmel Street she changes a lot. She becomes obsessed in books when first she didn’t even know how to read, and she was innocent to the world but soon later she saw how horrible the world is and it changed her into a different person who didn’t think the world was great. She at first loved Hitler but after she saw what he was doing to the Jews she hated him with all her soul, and it was those traits that made Max and Liesel friends. Liesel shows great perseverance in her life through two wars and she still is alive and well. Liesel is not the only one who showed perseverance. Hans persevere when he was sent to fight in Russia 48, lived through the war, and luckily could go home due to an injury. I rate this book 5 stars and I hope you take my advice and read this book for yourself. Thank You and I am Brett Owen.
