How would you like to hear a story about death, and destruction, and depression, through the eyes of the grim reaper himself? Well you can get all that in this book, The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak.

Liesel in the beginning did not know how to read but was taught by the kind Hans, this is when she started feeling comfort in words. She starts gathering books to read while her family was sheltering a Jewish boy named Max. Multiple exciting and sad things happen to both the characters and the world itself in this book. Like how liesel becomes smarter and learns the true power of words and accepts her fate, and the world slowly becomes more filled with anti semitic slurs and graphiti while more and more nazi soldiers come in and convert people to their hateful ways.

The theme is that the power of words can do great things, like educate and give pleasure to Liesel, and horrible things, like empowering Hitler which ended in such a tragedy, and this is really emphasized by the grim reaper being the narrator. This is definitely a 4/5 star, pretty good, historical fiction book.
