Would you choose to wait to leave with your family, or leave alone to save yourself? Would you be able to make the long, hard journey? Would you be able to persevere through the loss? Today’s book, Is it Night or Day? is by Fern Schumer Chapman and is a historical fiction book. My name is Chloe Do. This book is based on true events about immigration and survival during 1938-1942. Having to leave your family, country, language, and everyday life, to travel across the ocean for a life you don’t know anything about, a life you don’t even want to live. Jews were treated unfairly and were not safe in Germany. Edith, is a Jew. She lives in Germany but it is dangerous for her to be there. Her family has multiple options on where to send her but America seems like the right place. She is sent to America to live with her relatives and to try to sponsor companies so her parents and grandmother can move there. Edith changes a lot throughout the book. She has to start speaking english instead of german and has to get used to the way America is. Her personality changes a lot, she starts to love baseball because there is a famous Jewish baseball player. The theme is that there is light in the dark. Her moving to America was sad and a dark time for her to move away from her parents. The light was that she could have a better life living with her relatives. I give this book at 4 star rating because it is a very good book and very suspenseful. Will Edith’s family make it to America?
