To Kill A Mockingbird
Walking home from school on a bright, sunny day until you reach that one house and it seems like -the sky had turned grey right then and there. Looking for a way not to pass by it, until you just give up and dart as fast as you can past it. The house that everyone runs by, never walks has never been remodeled or cleaned. All the grass has grown and a broken gate stands in front of it. “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee shows how in a small town in Alabama, there is a house that everyone runs by and never walks. It is the Radley House and inside lives Boo-Radley. None of the kids have seen him before, but the adults have. Every time Scout and Jem came home from school, they would always run past the Radley House, they wouldn’t even look at it. Until one day, they became curious who lived in it, so they tried to get a look at Boo-Radley but ended up failing. Then a couple months later, they were sitting in court watching Atticus prepare to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. One night, Scout prevents a mob from attacking Tom and Atticus at the jail. Many of Maycomb's white citizens question why Atticus accepted the case. The African American community, on the other hand, is grateful for his courage. During the trial, Atticus argues that Mayella's injuries could not have been caused by Tom, whose left arm was crushed in an accident years before. Atticus further suggests that Mayella's father, Bob Ewell, has been abusing her for years and is the real culprit. Will the judge accuse Atticus for the crime or Bob Ewell for accusing his daughter? Will Boo-Radley come out to support Atticus? Scout and Jem had great courage and bravery to stop a mob from attacking their father. Boo-Radley had great courage developing through the book as well. Lastly, Atticus was very brave to step up for a black man even when the people around him went against him. I’m Emily and I absolutely loved this book. The suspense and curiosity of the children got me to thinking about a house that I have in my neighborhood. Even though I know who lives in it, it still looks scary at night. So, since I loved it, I rate it a eight out of ten and I know you will love it too. Racism doesn’t have to be in the way of friendship, it doesn’t have to be here at all.
