Chains
Isabel has just been branded in Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book is a historical fiction book and is the first book of a series. I would say that this book should be read by 10-12 year olds, but could be enjoyed by everyone older because has some difficult vocabulary. This book is set during the time of the revolutionary war. Isabel is a slave with her younger sister, Ruth. After their master died, they were supposed to be set free, but after some unfortunate events, they were soon sold to a cruel loyalist couple. After a few months working for Madam Lockton, Isabel finds out something horrible had happened to Ruth. After this event Isabel is torn up and she starts to spy for the rebels on the plans of the loyalists. After Isabel finds the truth about Ruth, she intends to run away, but is still waiting for something… or someone. Throughout the book, Isabel becomes more and more responsible. She takes responsibility on her’s and other’s actions when she feels like she should. The theme of this book is determination. Isabel is determined to find her sister and escape from the cruel Locktons with her slave friend, Curzon. I’m Spencer Crawford and I would give this book 4 stars.
