This song is about accepting your past, and moving on. We all make mistakes, but we have to forget about them. Our past shapes who we are today, and it makes you who God has called you to be.
"Don't excuse yourself from life today on the pretense of your past." Don't make bad decisions now because of a decision you made in the past. The past is behind you, so you should make a change and make a better decision.
"You're hurt. You're broken. That's alright. This might be what it takes to wake you up." Everyone will be hurt or broken at some point in their life. That is completely acceptable. That's why the church exists. The church is not a place to boast in your perfection, but rather a place to seek help when you need it. So being in this broken state may be the thing to make you realize it's time to get help.
"It's what we know we aren't, that makes us who we are." We will never be perfection. We are all sinners, and we have to accept that what we have done shapes us, but makes us who we have become. We are who God has called us to be.
