Rom dancers; the first glimpse! Olal, Ambrym, Vanuatu
July 2011: Magic Festival, day 1. This is our first glimpse of the Rom dancers who are men taking their first grade. After performing in this dance for the first time, they'll be able to wear the nambas (penis sheath), bark belt and hibiscus flower behind one ear. It looks like the other dancers are escorting the Rom dancers into the natsaro, in the same way that they had escorted us earlier.
