Sand drawing in Ambrym
July 2011; Olal, north Ambrym. On the second day of the Magic Festival, after the performers had brought us a collection of yams, a young man gave us a demonstration of sand drawing, creating a yam. Seeing how impressed we were, other young men drew a variety of patterns; fish, canoes, turtles... this is an art much practised in Olal.
