Magic at the Ambrym Magic Festival, Vanuatu
July 2011: In the natsaro at Olal village, a spirit is summoned, the force barely contained in a stout stick. Pete was called over to try to hold the stick still towards the end of the performance. You can be sure that we questioned him about his experience at length, afterwards. He appeared a little shaken and was convinced that the men were not the ones shaking the stick.
Ambrym is known for its magic, some strange things did happen during our trip so maybe we got a glimpse of everyday magic. The locals seriously recognise its presence and our ni-Van friends who came with us brought protection against magic.
The Ambrym Magic Festival is held every July and is two days of incredible kastom performances; dance, music and costume. The 'back to my root's festival is in August. Exact dates are advertised on the internet.
To get to Olal in North Ambrym you will fly from Santo to Craig Cove then take a small boat transfer for two and a half hours from Craig Cove to Olal.
