Where Lions Once Roamed.
The modern lion was once widely distributed across most of Africa, parts of Europe and Asia.
It is now confined to a number of isolated areas. Represented in blue on the map.
This is only 20% of its historic range.
One hundred years ago there were as many as 200,000 lions in Africa. There are now as little as 20,000.
Human activity is to blame.
African lions as a whole are now vulnerable to extinction in the wild.
On a positive note, conservation efforts have had some success, in areas such as Kruger National Park in South Africa and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.
Asiatic Lion are now confined to the Gir National Park in Gujarat, western India.
Evidence has been found that Lions may have also inhabited modern-day Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, and Germany.
