This Reed Warbler feeds her chick.
Or so she thinks.
You see.
This giant chick is an imposter.
The Reed Warblers are brood parasitised by the common cuckoo.
The Mother Cuckoo lands on a Reed Warbler's nest and removes an egg before replacing it with her own, similar-looking egg.
The Reed warbler parents often accept and incubate the replacement egg, oblivious to the trickery.
The cuckoo chick usually hatches before the warbler chicks. The cuckoo chick methodically evicts all Warbler eggs from the nest.
If a warbler chick manages to hatch. It too will be pushed out of the nest.
The cuckoo is a much larger bird than its hosts, and it needs to monopolize the food supplied by its foster parents.
The young cuckoo will continue to demand food from its tiny foster parents, even after it has left the nest.
