Meet the Numbat. A unique animal, even by Australian standards.
This carnivorous marsupial can eat more than 20 thousand termites in one day.
The Numbat digs up termites from loose soil with its front claws and then captures them with its long, sticky tongue
Numbats are endangered and it's estimated that there are fewer than 1,000 left Numbats remaining in the wild.
Their historical population was across Southern Australia. Their numbers were decimated by the introduction of the European red fox in the 19th century.
There is now a major Numbat reintroduction to the wild program being run by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.
