What do you do when your honest reaction to a famous cultural site offends someone from that culture?
In this episode, I share the story of my visit to Versailles during the pandemic, my very unfiltered first impressions, and the eye-opening experience that followed. What began as a personal reaction to the palace’s over-the-top opulence became an unexpected lesson in how French people relate to their history — even the parts that seem outdated, uncomfortable, or downright ridiculous.
Along the way, I reflect on the Revolution, the contradictions of French identity, the difference between how Australians and French people approach the past, and why Versailles might not be as simple as gold-plated propaganda after all.
