Practising my traditional archery skills today and a couple of shooting tips came to mind, about retrieving wooden arrows, that I thought may be of use to you.

First tip: Always watch where your loosed arrows are going once you have taken the shot. This may seem obvious to some, but easy to forget to do.

Many a time my wooden arrows have either missed, bounced or skimmed off the target. Some of those have flown off into the undergrowth somewhere or buried themselves into the muddy or grassy ground.

Because I mostly shoot with arrows that have natural white or grey goose fletchings, they are not always easy to spot when they go astray :-). This habit of watching where the arrows go has saved me from losing a lot of arrows. I've lost a few in the past and recent, but I do manage to find most of the stray arrows thanks to this tip.

Second tip: (1.36 on the video timer) I demonstrate how to pull an arrow which has buried itself horizontally (flat long) into the ground. If the arrow is pulled against the grain of the feather barbs then it will most likely end up with fletchings that are damaged or broken.

This technique is quick and simple to do and like my fletchings in the video, will probably just need a touch up with steam. I'll be publishing a video soon about how to steam wooden arrow fletchings.

A little about me: I'm a British traditional, instinctive, female archer who enjoys shooting the English Longbow. I like to explore and experiment with different styles. techniques in many positions and forms. And am always trying out as many creative ways to do so as I can think of.
I'm happily married to my husband who's also my camera man and does an amazing job of capturing photos and videos of my archery shooting practice sessions. You'll hear and see him from time to time.

My main shooting ground is the garden, be it the back, front, side of the yard, doesn't matter to me. Although distance of the shot can be limited, it enables me to practice in my own time and more space to experiment with my shooting training.

I hope you enjoy watching this video and gained some new archery tips to help you in your own archery journey.
