How does the FBW system work in general?
The flight control surfaces are all:
Electrically controlled
Hydraulically operated.
In addition, the stabilizer and rudder can be controlled mechanically.
How does it work?
The rudder can be moved by both pilots through pedals in the cockpit, which provide electrical inputs. In addition, there is also a protection system called "RTLU" or (Rudder Travel Limitation Unit) in the A320 family. This system uses a combination of hydraulic and mechanical mechanisms to limit the maximum deflection of the rudder during flight, to avoid excessive loads on the vertical stabilizer at high speeds. It includes two electrohydraulic actuators that move the rudder, and a computer that monitors the rudder position and ensures that it remains within safe limits of movement.
Why perform this test?
The A320 uses the G - B - Y hydraulic systems to control rudder movement. all three rudder actuators are a vital part of this hydraulic system, responsible for controlling rudder movement.
Indeed, in the video, each of these hydraulic actuators is tested individually to accomplish maximum rudder deflection in both sides, on the ground. After all, the rudder is a critical component of the aircraft control system, allowing the pilot to maintain directional control of the aircraft during flight.
For this reason, the A320's rudder actuators are designed to be very reliable and are extensively tested to ensure safety compliance with stringent safety standards. In the unlikely event of a failure, however, backup systems are provided to ensure control of the aircraft.
