A320 | APU - Auxiliary Power Unit
The APU or (Auxiliary Power Unit), is a small gas turbine jet engine located at the rear of the aircraft, capable of providing an independent source of electrical and air power to the systems, both on the ground and in flight. But unlike Turbo-Fan engines, it is not capable of generating thrust.
the APU is mechanically composed of a small gas turbine engine with a single-shaft compressor driven by a two-stage axial-flow turbine. this turbine in turn, drives a centrifugal load compressor and a gear box connected to the 90 KVA AC generator.
The APU is located in the tail section of the aircraft fuselage, in a fireproof compartment. At the bottom of the tail section are two access doors, secured by seven latches that open outward to provide easy access for service and maintenance.
● the APU is used on the ground to:
▸ Provide electrical power to the electrical system, when, for example, the GPU is absent.
▸ Provide compressed air for engine starting and air conditioning system.
● During takeoff for:
▸ Provide compressed air for air conditioning, thus avoiding the reduction in engine thrust caused by the use of engine compressed air, when it is critical to optimize aircraft performance.
● In flight for:
▸ Back up the electrical system.
Support the air conditioning system.
Restart the engines in case of failure
During ground operations, the APU is designed to operate safely even without flight crew supervision. In case of fire in the APU compartment:
▸The APU fire warning is activated in the cockpit;
▸A horn resonates in the front undercarriage compartment;
▸The AVAIL light goes out and the FAULT light comes on;
▸The APU initiates the emergency stop sequence;
▸The APU's fire extinguisher is discharged.
