Tai Chi (or Taiji) is a noncompetitive martial art known for both its defense techniques and its health benefits. Lakeland native Jim McLellan is a master tai chi teacher offering lessons Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 a.m. at the YMCA of West Central Florida.
Jim says the rhythmic breathing and movement of tai chi can help to slow the pulse and regulate blood pressure. The ancient Chinese tradition has evolved over centuries and is now used to help alleviate stress and anxiety.
Steve McKenzy, a longtime student describes tai chi as a dance that enhances his overall feeling of wellness. Sandra Cannon initially tried the class to help with her balance and fell in love with it. She encourages others not to be intimidated and to come out to try a tai chi class for themselves.
