Mount Dukono is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, located on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province. Rising to an altitude of approximately 1,335 meters, its main crater, Malupang Warirang, has continuously emitted smoke and volcanic ash since a major eruption in 1933.
Dukono's activity is intense, and it shows signs of eruption almost every year, even every month. Ash columns can rise thousands of meters, and the sound of eruptions can sometimes be heard in nearby villages.
The local community lives alongside the mountain but remains vigilant. When ash begins to fall, they immediately wear masks and cover water sources. Because of this, Mount Dukono is known as the "mountain that never sleeps."
Despite its challenging nature, the natural beauty surrounding Dukono attracts adventurers. However, due to its danger, climbing is only permitted when conditions are safe.
Safe Climbing Tips (If Permitted):
Check the mountain's status with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) ("Alert" status = no entry within a 2–5 km radius).
Wear a mask (N95 or gas mask), especially near the crater.
Bring a GPS and a local guide as the path can become obscured and the weather can be extreme.
Avoid approaching an active crater – even if it's not erupting, there's always the potential for danger.
Monitor the wind: Volcanic ash can blow away or towards climbers.
Prepare physically and logistically: there are no natural water sources on the upper trail.
