Mount Gamkonora is an active volcano located on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. It is part of the Halmahera volcanic zone and is one of many active volcanoes in eastern Indonesia.
This mountain is monitored by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) through a volcano observation post. Its status can change at any time depending on the mountain's activity. Mount Gamkonora is also located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and in the collision zone of the Halmahera microplate, making it highly tectonically and volcanically active. The mountain's location is also close to the west coast of Halmahera, meaning a major eruption could potentially trigger a volcanic tsunami.
Mount Gamkonora has a long history of eruptions, with records dating back to the 17th century. Some notable eruptions:
1673 – One of the major eruptions that caused significant changes to the mountain's structure.
1987 – Explosive eruption with ash and lava ejections.
2007 – Thousands of residents evacuated as activity increased and ash plumes spread to surrounding villages.
2018 – Mild phreatic activity and increased alert status.
For the local indigenous community, Mount Gamkonora holds spiritual significance. It is believed to be the abode of ancestral spirits, a sacred site. Several traditional rituals are still performed to "ask permission" before climbing or during volcanic activity. Unlike more popular mountains in Java or Bali, Gamkonora remains relatively unspoiled and rarely visited, making it suitable for explorers or researchers seeking a pure exploration experience.
