Mount Sindoro, also known as Mount Sundoro, is an active volcano located in the province of Central Java, Indonesia. This mountain has an altitude of about 3,153 meters above sea level (masl) and is included in the Dieng Mountains area. Mount Sindoro is often a favorite destination for climbers because it has beautiful natural scenery, especially at the top, where climbers can enjoy a panorama of other mountains such as Mount Sumbing, Merapi, Merbabu, and Slamet.
Mount Sindoro has an active crater at the top that sometimes emits sulfur smoke, signaling volcanic activity. Administratively, this mountain is located on the border of Temanggung Regency and Wonosobo Regency. Commonly used hiking trails include trails from Kledung and Tambi. The mountain is also surrounded by tea plantations and agricultural fields, adding to the natural charm of the surroundings.
Mount Sindoro is also part of a series of volcanoes on the island of Java that were formed due to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Eurasian Plate. Its volcanic activity lasted for thousands of years, forming this stratovolcanic mountain with a distinctive cone. The active crater at the top is proof that Sindoro is still active even though it does not experience major eruptions often. Eruptions recorded in history are generally small-scale, with the predominance of volcanic ash and sulfur gas escaping.
Related to the myths and beliefs of the people around this mountain, it is considered a sacred place and is often associated with the spiritual world. Mount Sindoro and its neighbor, Mount Sumbing, are often referred to as "twin mountains" because they stand close together.
Popular legend states that Sindoro and Sumbing are two brothers in the figure. They are described as two "warring mountains," so they have different shapes. Sindoro is slimmer and pointed, while Cleft is larger and has a large crater.
Oiya one more thing, the history of the eruption of Mount Sindoro is not as intensive as other mountains such as Merapi, but it still needs to be watched out. Small eruptions were recorded several times, but did not pose much threat to the surrounding settlements. Volcanic activity such as the release of sulfur gas is frequent, giving a sign that the mountain is still active.
Mount Sindoro not only holds a long geological history, but also a wealth of local culture and traditions that become the identity of the surrounding community.
