This session was presented at the Imaging the Future Forum as part of international celebrations of World Creativity and Innovation Week (wciw.org) sponsored by Haggerty & Haggerty Digital and My Favorite Art Place.

Can artists really save the planet? As wildfires ignite across the globe, ocean levels rise, and entire ecosystems collapse, many contemporary artists have become climate activists, using their work as a platform to raise awareness and imagine a more sustainable future. Though the future is uncertain, the events of 2020 have shown us that global, concerted action against such existential threats, whether COVID-19 or climate change, is possible. It is through advocative environmental art that this action is made manifest, and positions art as a beacon of hope, educating us and compelling us to act for a shared future.

This session will examine the history, practice, and artworks that have formed the genre of environmental art.
