Producer and author Pat Moffett discusses the making of the award-winning film Ice Cream in the Cupboard, Alzheimer's disease, and challenges faced by family caregivers.

Ice Cream in the Cupboard is the story of Pat and Carman, Pat’s late wife. The film portrays Pat’s own experience as the caregiver for his wife who suffered and eventually died from early-onset Alzheimer's.

As a result of this tragedy, Pat learned some very difficult lessons about Alzheimers and caregiving in general. It is his mission to share those lessons with caregivers and those who may one day be faced with being a caregiver themselves. With 29% of US adults serving as family caregivers, the truth is that almost anyone could find themselves thrust into the family caregiving role.

Pat talks about mistakes he made as a caregiver, one of which could have cost the life of his wife were it not for their very smart dog. He will also talk about the lessons he learned in the process of caring for his wife--lessons that he hopes will help other caregivers not only take care of their loved ones but also take care of themselves.

Ice Cream in the Cupboard received the Best Feature Film Audience Choice Award and Best Feature Film Youth Award in the Rhode Island International Film Festival in 2019. It is available to watch for free on Amazon Prime.
