This session was presented at the Imaging the Future Forum as part of international celebrations of World Creativity and Innovation Week (wciw.org) sponsored by Haggerty & Haggerty Digital and My Favorite Art Place.
Physical Therapists Christina Panetta and Myrbelson Geffrard discuss the exciting advancement of physical therapy education in Haiti in the wake of the disastrous earthquake of 2010.
This natural disaster left 300,000 citizens of Haiti dead. Prior to that day 80,000 people in Haiti were disabled. On the day of the earthquake an additional 300,000 citizens also became disabled.
Christina and her husband, founders of Panetta Physical Therapy, travelled to Haiti to help. Not only did they offer immediate relief to many injured, they set about creating a degree-granting program for physical therapists in Haiti where none had existed.
On one of their trips to Haiti, they met 16-year-old Myrbelson W. Geffrard, called Wadner by nearly all who know him, in the small village of Dufailly. Wadner became inspired to become a physical therapist himself.
Christina and Wadner will talk about their journey of bringing better health and education to Haiti.
Christina graduated from Stony Brook University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Therapy in 1985.
Mybelson teaches and does physical therapy. He studied at Université de la fondation Dr. Aristide(UNIFA)
