Categorizing data to different data types is very important for any data analysis software in this case Tableau. Specifying data formats is essential as different functions for data analysis are linked to specific data formats, for example, you cannot easily use the same functions for string variables on number variables. Tableau enables the user to specify the data format even after importation just as a precaution if the user did not specify in the imported format. In addition, data format specification in Tableau is important if the analysis to be performed requires the data type to be transformed. For instances data on countries in a database is in the string format because countries or locations are in words. However, if one wish to generate a geographic visualization, then one has to change the data format of the field to geographical roles.
Tableau facilitates seven main data types, namely; numbers (whole), numbers (decimal), string, date and time, date, Boolean and geographical role. The capability of specifying data types in tableau is also useful when calculating calculated fields that are added to the imported data set. Set the data type is done after importation at the data source tab whereby tables containing information are dragged to the data source panel.
