In this video you can learn about Filters and Parameters in Tableau.
Data imported to tableau is at times too large for enhanced analysis whereby the user just to analyze just a few of the variables in afield based on relevance to the particular company or organization. This simplified analysis is performed using the filter or parameter feature of tableau. Just like in databases to filter means showing variables that meet particular criteria relevant to the field. For instance, a field containing the names of clients can be filtered based on the names of people starting with A.
However, Tableau uses an advanced filter technique whereby a field can be filtered using another field. In tableau this is easy to achieve, the first step is dragging the column you wish to filter to the rows tab. The next step involves dragging the field you wish to filter the column with to the filter section. For instance, if one wants to analyze the top clients based on profits. The filtered field is clients, therefore, the client’s field is dragged to the row tab, while the profit’s measure is the criteria used to filter therefore it is dragged to the filter tab. The next step is to specify the filter criteria this is achieved by editing the filter tab and specifying the top or bottom condition and the number of variables to be displayed, i.e. top 5 or top 20. The parameter feature in tableau comes about to simplify this filter method. In the event you wish to change the filter value you have to go back to the editing window however by creating a parameter, a slide feature of the parameter selected is displayed on the right side of the window with a slider. The slider is used to change the different criteria’s of filtering.
