In some instances, the data imported to tableau may not be complete for the purpose of enhanced analysis. Tableau is mainly a visualization platform for data analysis, therefore, data analysis based on calculations is performed before importing the data to tableau. Nevertheless, this is not always the case as additional analysis may be required after importation. Tableau, on the other hand, is readily equipped with user functions to assist in this. This is done through the calculation field command in tableau. The calculation field command is quite similar to the logical field command. However, for the logical calculations, the answers are based on comparisons of fields to be in agreement or disagreement to a certain condition. Calculated fields, on the other hand, go beyond logical comparisons. For instance, one can generate fields by creating calculations that enforce different functions between different fields.
Tableau offers a whole range of statistical and non-statistical functions in its calculated fields command. The result of the calculated field command is represented as a measure in the measure column. The measured value can then be utilised as an add on to the different visualization marks such as size or column, the calculated field is dragged to any visualization tool and the result is clearly seen in the infographic selected in Tableau.
