I was asked to modify an extension for a hammer drill bit. The thread in the crown is M16x2, and the thread on the extension is M20x2.
It will be necessary to grind the top and cut the M16x2 thread.
I measured the hardness of the extension in the thread area. The hardness turned out to be 51 HRC.
This is quite high hardness. Parts made from materials with such hardness are usually processed with cutters with carbide inserts.
I didn't have such a cutter. But in my experience, such materials can be processed with quick cutters. Quick cutters have a hardness of around 64 HRC.
There is a video on my channel where I showed how I process high-alloy, high-strength steels, titanium, and a cutter shank made of P18 steel, hardened to 45 HRC, with a quick cutter R6M5.

And on this extension I will cut with a quick cutter. I sharpened the cutting cutter into a threaded one.
The existing extension does not have a thread exit groove. I think this is done for durability reasons.
Therefore, I will also cut the thread without a groove. It’s more difficult to cut threads this way, because you have to quickly retract the cutter in time.
This is how you can cut a thread on an extension for a drill bit with a simple high-speed cutter, and the material of the extension has quite a lot of hardness.
