Is addiction a disease? Doctor Steven Ey, MD shares with the American Health Journal community his determinations on the question whether addiction is a disease or not. It is apparently a very common question to ask if addiction is a disease. It is not exactly the same as diseases like diabetes or heart disease, because it appears to be self-inflicted. However, the answer to the question is -- yes. Addiction is a disease.
Like diabetes, addiction exhibits both genetic and behavioral elements of causation. Addiction is chronic like many illnesses and there is no apparent cure. While there is no cure, there are treatment options that allow addicts to live manageable and happy lives free of chemical dependency. The most effective treatments involve the patient willing to change their behavior to make changes for the better.
