Dr. Phillips reveals that some people are genetically predisposed to alcohol abuse and alcoholism. This means that alcohol abuse can be seen as a hereditary trait amongst many individuals.
Although alcoholism may be passed down genetically, there is apparently no single gene that is to blame for the disease. Caused by the combination of multiple different genes, alcoholism is known to be a polygenic disease. There is no single indicator of alcohol abuse, as the disease is the product of multiple variables. These variables include social elements, family upbringing, and genetic characteristics.
