John Taylor discusses the addiction to alcohol, as opposed to other drug addictions. Alcoholics typically have a much longer history, lasting around 10 to 20 years. The reason why this is so difficult is because treatment needs to be more intensive. It is much harder to change someone's habits that have been formed over a long period of time, rather than breaking a habit that has just recently formed. When a patient initially seeks treatment, the first step to a good recovery is a heavy detox process. After the alcohol is totally out of the system, the treatment process begins in which a person's entire life must be analyzed.
