This video developed by the STEPWISE team provides teachers with an introduction and overview of lessons and student activities regarding ways that fields of science may be manipulated to serve interests of particular individuals (e.g., financiers) or groups (e.g., corporations, governments, transnational groups, etc.). This video introduces three other videos, each meant to teach students about different aspects of science manipulation. The first of these helps students to understand and explore degrees to which conclusions in the sciences may represent absolute truths - mainly due to basic limitations of methods in the sciences. The second deals with different forms of intentional manipulation, with the third video exploring fake grassroots activist groups through what is called astroturfing. Much of the information about such uncertainties and manipulations comes from fields of Science & Technology Studies (STS). Once students know about and understand such aspects of the nature of science and technology, they can then develop and implement more informed personal and sociopolitical actions to overcome harms they perceive in relationships among fields of science & technology and societies & environments (STSE).
