Corpus Delicti rule could save you from a criminal conviction

Corpus Delicti Rule! This is a rule of evidence referred to as the “body of crime”. It states that a defendant’s incriminating statement cannot be used against them until other corroborating evidence is offered.
This rule prevents people from being convicted by their own statement alone.
In 15 years of lawyering I’ve only used it once, but it’s a good rule to know and this is a fun story to tell.
In this case my client was charged with prostitution after an officer questioned him outside of a hotel. The officer believed a prostitute may be in the area. My client told the officer that he had been with the prostitute when questioned. No other evidence was obtained. The corpus delicti rule saved this client from a criminal conviction.
