In this video, I tear down an ASUS ROG Strix G512LI gaming laptop that suddenly died with a strong burning smell. The damage? Severe molten/deformed plastic right next to the HDMI port and a badly swollen, bubbled spot on the motherboard. I show exactly what to measure with a multimeter to find shorts on the power rails, dig out and scrape the carbonized laminate (the burnt black conductive material caused by the short), clean the area... but the PCB remain dead.
This is a real-world repair attempt — sometimes you win, sometimes the damage is just too deep. Hope this helps anyone dealing with a similar no-power ASUS G512LI or gaming laptop short circuit!
Spoiler alert - my microscope camera sucks...
