Living in Japan during the mid-'80s had a real impact on the music I was exposed to, especially the music out of the UK & Europe.
The Blow Monkeys were one of those bands out of the UK that were supremely talented but really only saw limited success in the U.S, and even in the UK, they never really hit the top tier, even at their peak.
But, man, did they put out good music. And nothing captures that better than "Digging Your Scene" from 1986. What an amazing tune!! And while it was their biggest hit, charting in both in the U.S. and the U.K., I think it is one of the underrated gems of the period. Just as the band was.
"Digging Your Scene" is impossible to classify. It is new wavey, it is soulful, it is jazzy, it is pop. For me, it had immediate appeal the first time I heard it and, now, nearly 40 years later, it is still as compelling and as fresh to me as it was when I first heard it.
The music video for the song is incredible and one that I love. However, this live version really captures the song and the band. The quality is not the best, but it is still fantastic!!
