Wet Willie - Weekend (12" Extended Play Version - Audio Only)
My YouTube channel would not be complete without this 1979 masterpiece!! And when I call it a masterpiece, I am being completely serious!
Music, movies and food are all similar in at least way!! The critics may despise / mock / disparage certain selections, but that doesn't mean that the average doesn't love them any the less.
The average person loves their guilty pleasures!! The critics be damned!!
"Weekend" by Wet Willie is absolutely one of those for me! It was never intended to be some sort of musical masterpiece for critics! It was meant to be EXACTLY what it is... a fun, infectious song about something the average working person takes very seriously! The 5 o'clock whistle and the weekend time with family. Well, at least, that is the way it used to be.
I remember when the tune first came out back in 1979, It was just awesome. But then it very quickly disappeared.... as did most music associated with the disco era.
Then, a number of years later, when I was going to grad school, the local rock station decided that this would be their Friday 5 p.m. kick off the weekend song! Not "Working For The Weekend" by Loverboy, but this tune. And, boy, it was awesome!!
I do love the tune and it never fails to put me in a better mood. This extended play version is particularly awesome because it takes the radio version and carries it on with a longer groove.
There is actually an official music video for the song that I have that YouTube won't let me post. I am guessing that the band feels that it is not politically correct so wants to keep it hidden. What a shame because it is such good fun!! Fortunately, there are other platforms where it can be found....
But I won't name them here.... go see if you can find it!!
