At five weeks of pregnancy, the embryo is rapidly changing. Gestational and yolk sacs develop around the embryo to protect and nourish it until the placenta takes over [1]. The umbilical cord is also growing [1].

The embryo now has three layers of cells that will form its different structures and organs:
● The endoderm (inner layer) will develop into the respiratory and digestive systems [2].
● The mesoderm (middle layer) will develop into the circulatory, skeletal, and muscular systems [1].
● The ectoderm (outer layer) will develop into the nervous system, hair, nails, and skin [1,2].

Ultrasonography can now detect most pregnancies [3].
