Sum Sumif and Sumifs in Excel
The most common type of function in excel is the sum function that adds up values in a specified range be it a cell or raw and outputs the total value in the last cell. This function is useful in accounting using excel. Nevertheless, additional features have also been incorporated in MS Excel 2016, that build on to the summation function. These new function options allow the user to specify the values to be summed up based on meeting a specified condition or criterion. This is achieved through the use of two sum functions, that is the sum if and sum ifs functions in excel.
The basic sum function involves typing the equal sign at a cell followed by the word sum and then the range of values based on cell reference in brackets. The cell range is identified by the first and last cell separated by a colon. The sum if function is utilized to sum values of variables that meet a certain condition for example if it is a table with employee’s names, departments, and their salaries, one can sum up salaries based on their department, therefore the criteria will be department and the range of values in the department column the sum will then be done after extraction of salaries of people within the specified department. Sum ifs, on the other hand, is utilized for summation based on many conditions that have to be met for example sum of salaries of individuals called Sam in the accounts department.
