Kchi-noodin Kaamdaakiing, "Big Wind on the Land" | MSHDA Affordable Housing

[TRANSCRIPT] Today we are at the Herkner property owned by the Grand Traverse Band. This development is called Kchi-noodin Kaamdaakiing and that translates into big wind on the land.
This is the Grand Traverse Band LIHTC project number one. It includes 36 units from one bedroom to four bedrooms within its apartments, townhouses, single family cottages and elder duplexes. This tribe has long sought to increase their footprint for housing in and around their land. By adding this to tribal land and building housing on it. They are putting workforce housing closer to job centers for their families. That's going to be huge. And when you consider that a lot of low income families can spend upwards of 20% of their household income on transportation costs, anything you can do to help lower that puts money in the pockets of those families. So we're looking forward to the families getting here, getting settled into this local community, getting their kids in the schools and participating right away.
To know that we're still here. When you look at what our people went through, the adversity. Earlier today, Elder Tom Peter said, “We've been here since time immemorial.” They say home is where the heart is and so to have the ability to build homes here, it means the world to us.
