DAVE'S TOP 10 MOVIES SEEN IN 2021 #6 MINARI
Four of my Top 10 favourite movies of 2021 were also in the Academy Awards' list of their Best Pictures last year. My tastes often coincide with theirs, but hardly ever for the actual top spot. 'Parasite' was my favourite the year before, and almost two decades earlier 'Chicago' was my most loved pic of its year, but nothing in between. Lee Isaac Chung's beautiful and personal 'Minari' is a Korean/American movie which portrays his family's journey to the United States in the 1980's to make a new life for themselves. After my first viewing I was so entranced by its heart and its intimacy; slightly less so upon an encore screening. I guess movies are intended for the audience to get all it needs from it the first time, but absolutely there are plenty of films that require multiple viewings not only to get more, but also as they repeatedly inspire and provide joy.
There are some exquisite images and some poignant moments between the ensemble and its individual cast members; most notably Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung and young Alan Kim, but the whole cast is superb. I recommend this personal and identifiable tale of migration and of family values. My 6th favourite movie of 2021 - 'Minari'.
