Some members of the heron family (Ardeidae) photographed at Lake Cathie in recent weeks. Three species are featured: Eastern Great Egret, Little Egret, and White-faced Heron. A fourth species, the Striated Heron, is frequently encountered in the area, but I didn't make any photographs of it during this period.
Some of these photographs were shot in a backlighting situation. It's lighting I love for its expressive qualities. It poses challenges for photographic exposure, but these can be managed with canny use of exposure locking once the electronic viewfinder of my camera shows me the sweet spot that just avoids highlight clipping. On my camera, the AEL (Auto-exposure-lock) button allows me to to "lock it in" and then shoot while only having to concentrate on the composition and the moment(s).
