Most likely, these are circles from machines for centerless grinding.
Circles are heavy. For example, one of the circles of the circle weighs 38 kg.
These circles have different grain sizes.
These are Soviet industrial circles, which means they are of high quality.
I decided to cut bars from these circles.
I cut off the plates using an angle grinder with a diamond cutting disc. The cuts are slightly uneven, non-flat. Therefore, I leveled them with a small angle grinder with a cup diamond wheel.
Finally smoothed the surface of the bar with another abrasive bar, which I made from a large grit circle.
To do this, I cut off the plates from another circle with a large grain size. I took two plates. I also leveled their surfaces with a small angle grinder with a cup diamond wheel. Then he rubbed the plates against each other, wetting them with water, that is, he processed them in a wet way.
Got two plates with a smooth, flat surface. On one of these plates I will now level the first bar. Also wet.
Due to the fact that the second circle has more grit, the first bar is processed more intensively, quickly.
That is, we can say that I process the bar I need with the help of a second bar with a larger grain size. Although, of course, there is their mutual wear and tear, mutual grinding.
The contact area increases with rubbing, as the protrusions and irregularities disappear. Therefore, the contact pressure decreases. It seems that there is almost no material removal.
Therefore, I decided to apply the well-known method of increasing pressure. On the surface of the second bar, which acts as a tool, grooves were cut on the surface.
Now the contact pressure has increased, it has become easier to grind the bar.
After I leveled the abrasive bars, I tried to sharpen a knife on them. It turned out that the bars sharpened rather badly. The knife slips, the metal grinds a little. I explain this by the fact that the abrasive grains became dull during the mutual processing of the bars and the wear products clogged the space between the grains.
I decided to restore the cutting properties of abrasive bars with the help of simple river sand.
I pour a little sand on one bar, lightly moisten it with water. I put on it another bar of the same grain size. Rub the bars against each other in a circular motion, back and forth.
I washed the bars and again I try to sharpen the knife. The knife no longer slips. Sharpening is faster. Now you don't have to press hard.
This treatment is called free abrasive treatment. In this case, the grains of the abrasive roll along the bar and pull out the upper blunt grains from it. And the lower sharp grains come into play.
Tried using sandblasting abrasive instead of sand. It is larger than sand and harder. Processing is faster. The abrasive does not grind longer.
Thus, the manufacture of such abrasive bars consists of four stages: cutting off the bars from the wheel, leveling with a diamond cup wheel, leveling on the abrasive bar, restoring the cutting properties of the bars with the help of a free abrasive.
