About this video: There are a lot of reasons to wear a luxury watch in 2021. The least of which, in my opinion, is to actually tell the time. From our iPhones, to our cars to our computers to, well, our Apple Watches, there is a more accurate time than a mechanical, luxury watch can provide everywhere you look.

With this, it makes people ask watch enthusiasts why we wear the watches we do. In 2021, I feel like more people are curious about why someone in their 20s would wear a watch more so than the watch itself. This is taken to another level if it is a brand like Rolex or Omega.

The perfect backdrop for this is my Omega Speedmaster. It isn’t just any Omega Speedmaster though. It is a 1998 Omega Speedmaster Michael Schumacher special edition reference # 3510.12.

This watch is, in my opinion, one of the most stunning Speedmasters I have ever seen. If you go to Omega’s site today and look at Speedmasters, they are all black and still with dark colors. These look good, but they don’t pop.

One of the reasons that you wear watches today is for the pop. In this case, the yellow dial paired with the red chronograph hand and yellow on the main hour and minute hand cutting into a loomed black part of the hand. This watch pops. It looks really good, and it stands out.

This eye capturing pop is one of the things I love about this particular watch. Not so much that it grabs the attention of others. I mean I have NEVER had someone comment on this watch while wearing it. However, I stare at it multiple times per day appreciating that I have even been blessed enough to own it all.

And that moves me on to the next reason that I wear a watch in 2021. It is a token of accomplishment. Patrick and I have worked hard to purchase the watches that we own. It’s taken years of dedicated work. We climbed out of bankruptcy to build a successful company, and our watches, this one especially, are reminders of that.

I look at this Omega, and it brings me to gratitude. Gratitude that I have been able to overcome extreme hardships to be able to purchase it, and that I was able to do so at all.

History also comes to the forefront with this watch and all older watches. This watch has past through, as far as I know, two other owners before reaching me. It has been apart of two other individual’s lives, and it has been around for nearly as long as I have.

You are now the caretaker to something that was, at one point, something that reminded the wearer of their own life, successes, failures, moments. Patel Philippe even runs advertising for this with their “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” ad campaign.

This is something I feel with my watches. I am now the caretaker for them, and they will live lives after me. Either when I decide it is time to pass them to a new owner or when I am dead and gone. This watch will be ready to be loved and cared for by someone else.

Someone else who you hope will have a similar love and passion for watches that you do. Watches, at the end of the day, a kind of collecting in the modern day. The Michael Schumacher Edition Speedmaster that inspired this video is an example of this. It was the first watch developed with Michael Schumacher when he partnered with Omega in the mid-90s. It was also sold in a really cool F1 tire inspired box that was signed and required a special tool to open.

The watch lives in my watch box when I’m not wearing it, but this special packaging lives on a shelf in my office that I see every day even when I’ve left the Speedmaster at home. This just drills in the point that watches are about collecting in the modern day just as much as they are about wearing.

For many of us who wear watches, it isn’t about flexing. It’s about a passion. The passion of collecting, storing, caring for, and passing on these watches is why we wear them. Or... that’s why I wear them. If you love watches and are watching this video, why do you love watches? Let us know in the comment section below, and be sure to like and subscribe for more content.
