About this video: So I bought a car from Carvana. Well, actually, I bought two cars from Carvana.
It all starts with me downloading Carvana because I was curious what they would give me for this BMW 428i. I started looking for a Jaguar XJL, and eventually a Jaguar popped up for pre-order. Preordering on Carvana is basically where they list the car with just basic information. Carvana will allow you to preorder the car for $100. By doing so, you are giving yourself the right of first refusal when the photos of the car are available.
So with a preorder on Carvana, all you can do is wait. When I finished my preorder, I was told the car was on hold and I could keep shopping. I kept looking at Jaguar XJs for weeks.
Another popped up that I was interested in and this being a high demand car, I started the purchase process. Carvana says that this will hold a car and give you a 40 minutes to decide. That's what I was doing. I decided I didn't want this car and would continue waiting.
However, the preorder was gone. After calling Carvana and waiting on hold, I was told that when I got started the hold on the other car, my pre-order was canceled.
That was my first Carvana experience.
After that, I was a bit sick of Carvana. Then, I randomly decided I wanted to try a Ford Focus ST. I started looking on Carvana at different Ford Focus STs and finally landed on a blue one. I got all of the paperwork done, insurance, and everything.
On delivery day, I got a call from the Carvana driver. I was informed that the car’s front bumper was loosely hanging on and that the color was very noticeably off. Because of this, they really didn’t think I would want the car. I was given the option of them bringing the car to me or not. I told them not to worry about it. I would move on.
That was my second Carvana experience.
I do want to take a very quick aside here and talk about Carvana financing. Do not use Carvana to finance your car. It is almost 100% of the time going to be a much, much higher interest rate. My rate with Carvana is over 10% whereas Capital one offered me a 5.9% rate. Depending on the car my rate at other banks is half of the rate Carvana offers. Do not finance with Carvana.
For the third Carvana experience, I went back to the Jaguar XJL on Carvana. I was able to find a stunning, from the website, black Jaguar XJL with a stunning brown and black interior. It was my dream spec and had everything I have ever wanted in an XJL.
I went through the purchase process, and a Carvana truck arrived at our house with a 2013 Jaguar XJL on it.
Then, when driving down a side street right after delivery, Patrick and I started slightly smelling coolant as we approached a small red light intersection. As I put my foot down on the gas a “low coolant” warning light popped up on the dash. I parked the car and looked behind it to see a trail of coolant.
I called the driver. He came and got the car and said it would be like I didn’t accept the car.
If this was the end of my Carvana experience, my review would be to make sure you get ANY car from Carvana or not inspected. Don’t trust Carvana’s inspections, and expect things to be wrong with the car just like any used car you would buy at a car lot. The upside being the process of giving the car back was easy if something should come up.
My down payment was pulled though. This spawned over three hours of phone calls, more hours than I can remember waiting for callbacks, and tons of headaches in order to get my $2,700 back.
So that is my Carvana experience. What would my review be? Well, I recommend staying away from Carvana. From more average cars like a Ford to high-end luxury cars like the XJL, I have had different issues along the way that will prevent me from ever using them again. As with any used car though, if you do by a car from Carvana, get it inspected at an independent shop or a dealer. This $150 will be well worth it in what it could have you in maintenance.
