Why Dennis Schroder Will Elevate the Warriors
In this video, I'm going to explain why and how Dennis Schroder will impact the Golden State Warriors on both ends of the floor. This is a great pickup considering the offensive struggles that this team has been facing the last few weeks. It is evident that without the presence of Steph Curry on the floor, the team cannot stay organized. Now with the addition of Dennis Schroder, there are more possibilities for the team to stay connected through the course of a 48-minute game.
The NBA trade deadline date is December 15th. However, the Warriors secured this deal with Dennis Schroder and the Brooklyn Nets a day prior. It was no secret that the Warriors had their eyes set on Brooklyn's biggest trade assets and Schroder was certainly one of them. Steve Kerr, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green all advocated for Schroder as a trade piece since they believed his play style could have a spot in the Warriors system. It is publicly reported that Schroder will potentially start alongside Curry in the backcourt but also receive all of the non-curry minutes.
Schroder is having a career year thus far. He's played very well for the expectations that are set for him to start the first 1/3 of the season. He's averaging almost 20 points and 7 assists with good shooting splits. He has produced multiple 20+ point performances that have made him a valuable trade piece. Although it may seem like Schroder doesn't fit with the Warriors, his talent and scoring ability are really what the Warriors need. Outside of Steph Curry, the Warriors really don't have another guard who can handle the ball and initiate action. Dennis Schroder can certainly fill that void as a solid perimeter player who can distribute and get to his spots. However, even though Schroder doesn't match the off-ball movement portion of the Warrior's offense, because of his contrasting play style, it can help the offense by balancing out the type of shots that the Warriors take.
Steve Kerr stated that he wants the team to shoot more threes coming into this season. However, it is just as important to generate quality 3-point looks if you have to be a high-volume 3-point shooting team. One of the ways to do that is to have multiple 2-point scoring threats on the roster. Besides Andrew Wiggins and maybe Jonathan Kuminga, no one really shoots a ton of 2 point shots at a high percentage. With Dennis Schroder now on the team, he can definitely address those issues. In this way, the off-ball players that match the Warriors system don't always have to rely on the system in order to have clean looks. As great as Steph Curry is, it can also benefit him at this stage in his career as well.
