Episode 11: Translanguaging
Translanguaging in education refers to the use of our full range of diverse language skills when teaching and learning. Following a multilingual approach, translanguaging enables fluid, dynamic, as well as strategic language access for the purposes of meaning making, knowledge construction, and communication.
The translanguaging strategy promotes multilingual inclusion and social-emotional belonging in diverse classrooms. It enables stronger connection of learning to cultural context and access to background knowledge received from the home and community. It supports higher order thinking processes and cognition by the dynamic and organic use of multilingual repertoire in the classroom. Participation and visible learning through interpersonal conversation, classroom sharing, collaboration, as well as academic discussion is enhanced. It also leads to more authentic assessments and displays maximum extent of learning.
