The Notepad++ source code editor is free open source software for the Microsoft Windows platform.

Notepad++ has VHDL support through a plugin which can be downloaded from the plugin manager from within Notepad++. The plugin offers syntax highlighting of the VHDL language, and the ability to copy the entity port and paste it as instantiation, signals or testbench stubs.
If you need a good editor, and not a full IDE, then Notepad++ with the VHDL plugin is a great choice.
