Chapter 4 of Val McDermid's New Year's Resurrection
The Bank of Scotland & The Scott Monument

Built in 1806 as the head office of the Bank of Scotland, and now the Scottish headquarters of the Lloyds Banking Group, this imposing building has been part of the Edinburgh skyline for more than 200 years.

The building looks out onto Princes Street Gardens and The Scott Monument.

The Victorian Gothic structure – the world’s tallest memorial to a writer - commemorates Edinburgh-born author, playwright and poet Sir Walter Scott, whose celebrated historical novels including Ivanhoe, Waverley and Rob Roy.

If you are feeling fit, you can climb the 287 steps to the top, from where there are panoramic views of the city.

The monument is open daily between 10:00 and 16:00. Last admission 15:30. During adverse weather conditions (especially high winds) please check the Twitter feed @EdinCulture before travelling, as the monument may be closed at short notice for safety reasons.
